Did you know that 75% of the U.S. population wears glasses or contact lenses?

It’s true. 

And, It’s believed that the first corrective lens – – – in this case a telescope – – – was used by the Roman Emperor Nero in 700 BC to watch the gladiators battle back then.

Those lenses were essentially polished rock crystals.

In 1021 AD, the Arab scientist al-Haytham produced the BOOK OF OPTICS, a text which accurately described how optics work with regard to human visual perception (great job, al-Haytham).

The Italians carried the ball further, and in the 1280s created wearable eyeglasses for the first time ever.

(No wonder some of the best looking frames still come from Italy)! 🙂

Reading glasses, which just about everyone will wear at some point later in life, helped to foster the printing industry and a big increase in books, pamphlets, and the general need to read.

Optical lenses were an AMAZING INVENTION that has had an enormous impact on our society, on science, on education, and how we view the world.
